How I Work in Therapy

Helping You Find Freedom from Food and Body Struggles

Discover Your Preferred Story with Narrative Therapy

At the core of my approach is Narrative Therapy, a powerful therapy method for helping you move beyond a life of disordered eating filled with shame and struggle. Narrative therapy enables you to move towards a story of peace, confidence, and greater self-worth.

At the root of eating disorders are stories that have often been imposed on you by others in your life and the culture we live in. It’s challenging to navigate being well in a world where ideas about health and wellness tend to be misinformed and unhealthy.

These might be stories about what it means to have a “good” body, the pressures of eating “right,” or the belief that your worth is tied to your appearance.

These negative stories can impact how you see and feel about yourself, your body and your life. You can get trapped in conflicting narratives about who you’re “supposed to be” rather than who you truly are.

Together in therapy, we’ll explore the dominant stories that have kept you trapped in a cycle of disordered eating. We’ll then seek out alternative narratives—those of your strengths, your resilience, and what it means to be genuinely nourished in your mind, body and spirit.

By re-authoring these old stories, you can reclaim your life and see yourself beyond your struggles with food and body image.

  • Healing from disordered eating is a deeply personal journey. While I’m here to support you, the real work of recovery is yours.

I know that you may have doubts about whether therapy will help. That’s understandable. You don’t need to be thoroughly convinced that recovery is possible—you just need asmall openness to the idea that your life can be different.

Even if recovery feels distant or out of reach, taking the first step by being curious is enough to start the journey.

  • My role in therapy is to walk alongside you, providing a safe and supportive space to explore new ways of being.

I understand the unique challenges of living with an eating disorder. I know how overwhelming it can be when your mind is consumed by thoughts about food and your body and how isolating it feels when others don’t understand your struggles.

I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental approach that respects your autonomy. Whether we’re working on understanding the physical experience of your body or the practical elements of day-to-day nourishment, I’m here to help.

My approach is non-pathologizing, affirming, and dedicated to growing my understanding of the diverse social and cultural factors” that shape your experience.

It’s understandable if you feel afraid and uncertain at the beginning of recovery, especially if you’ve known nothing else. While I promise to gently challenge you, I also promise that we’ll move at a pace that fits for you. You’ll always be in control, and I’ll always respect you as the driver of your journey.

We’ll work together to find practical strategies that align with your goals and help you move toward a life where you have a healthy relationship with food and feel good about your body.

  • My background as a Registered Nurse (RN) adds unique insight into the physiology of eating disorders, the medications you may be taking, how they might impact your experience, and how any illness or medical condition may affect you.

My nursing training and experience can also help you navigate healthcare systems, which can be particularly tricky when struggling with an eating disorder.

Traditional healthcare systems often fail to compassionately and competently address the needs of individuals from marginalized communities. I recognize that the path to healing is more accessible for some than others.

As a result, social justice is an integral part of my work. I consider it both a personal and professional responsibility to advocate for and honour individuals in larger bodies, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, BIPOC individuals, and others who have historically been marginalized.

I embrace existential therapy approaches that emphasize personal freedom, the search for meaning, as well as socio-structural approaches that focus on how social systems and power dynamics shape individual experiences.

Within these frameworks, I utilize various popular therapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT), addiction recovery models, and motivational interviewing.

I also work alongside neurodiverse people, including those with ADHD and those on the autism spectrum.

As you can see, my background offers a unique and specialized approach to disordered eating.

Regardless of the nature of your eating difficulties, I’m confident that I can help.

  • If you’re ready to re-author your life and discover a path that feels true to who you are and is free from disordered eating, I’m here to help.

You deserve to live a life that is free from the control of food and body issues.
